Moss Vale Station and Stabling Yard Upgrade

Degnan partnered with Transport for NSW to successfully design and deliver the Moss Vale Station and Stabling Yard Upgrade, enhancing accessibility, modernising station facilities and preparing the site to support the new Regional Rail Fleet.

The project encompassed a large and complex site and was delivered across two key areas: the station upgrade, which focused on accessibility, passenger amenities and commuter facilities, and the stabling yard upgrade, which improved operational capacity and functionality.

To meet the Disability Standards for Accessible Public Transport (DSAPT), three lifts were installed and both existing footbridges were upgraded. Enhanced accessibility was provided from both sides of the station, with new lift access from Argyle Street and Lackey Road.
Moss Vale Dalys Way reconfigured for better traffic flow and bus movements
Station improvements included upgraded entrances, waiting areas and ticketing facilities, along with enhanced security and communications systems incorporating CCTV and lighting upgrades.

A noise barrier was constructed along Lackey Road to protect the local community from operational train noise. The project incorporated an innovative composite panel system for part of the structure, delivering benefits in carbon reduction, cost efficiency, construction productivity and community amenity while maintaining effective acoustic performance.

Parking and bus arrangements at the station entrance were formalised, including dedicated accessible parking spaces, a new kiss-and-ride zone, and improved bus and coach drop-off facilities.
Archaeological sandstone layed by early settlers uncovered during construction was incorporated into the Dalys Way roundabout as a heritage feature.

In recognition of its sustainability achievements, the project, delivered by Transport for NSW and Degnan, was named a finalist in the 2026 Australasian Railway Association (ARA) Rail Industry Awards in the Sustainability Excellence Award category.
The project team implemented a range of innovative sustainability initiatives throughout delivery. Explore the case studies below to learn more about the solutions and outcomes that contributed to the project’s success.
  • Moss Vale station opened as Suttons Forest in December 1867. It was the terminus of the line until the extension to Marulan on 6 August 1868.
  • The station was renamed to Moss Vale in 1877.
  • In March 1999, a refueling and stabling facility for the Endeavour trains was built to the north of the station.
  • Moss Vale railway station was added to the New South Wales State Heritage Register in April 1999. It is one of the most important station groups in the State, as it contains rare examples of early buildings, various later structures, vice-regal buildings, unique entry arrangement, very high quality buildings and demonstrates the wealth and range of railway structures and the importance of rail travel in the past.
  • The station also has a strong social historical connection as it was used by Governors and is an important focal point of the town of Moss Vale.
