Calder Park Light Service Facility
Degnan has been awarded the contract to deliver the Light Service Facility (LSF) at Calder Park, supporting the long-term maintenance of Melbourne’s High Capacity Metro Trains. The facility is designed to enable whole-of-asset life maintenance, including light maintenance, presentation, and graffiti removal, ensuring Melbourne’s bigger, better trains remain safe, reliable, and ready for service. Building Melbourne’s Future
The Degnan team will work alongside Downer who is undertaking the long-term maintenance of the 70-seven car trains delivered by Evolution Rail Consortium which comprised Downer, CRRC and Plenary on behalf of the Victorian Government.

Purpose-Built Rail Infrastructure
The LSF provides dedicated tracks and functional workspaces to support light maintenance, inspections, and minor repairs for HCMT sets. By keeping trains on-site for routine maintenance, the facility improves operational efficiency across Melbourne’s rail network while maintaining the highest safety and reliability standards.
Sustainable Design and Environmental Care
Sustainability is built into the facility’s design. Rainwater reuse, environmentally sensitive stormwater management, and careful utility planning ensure the site operates responsibly. Environmental protection measures also preserve surrounding habitats, supporting local wildlife alongside Melbourne’s growing rail infrastructure.
Scope of Work
- Track and Site Layout: Over 1km of new track configuration and site layout.
- Infrastructure: Internal roads, car parks, drainage, and pathways.
- Overhead Structures: Wiring and switches.
- Train Maintenance Building: 1700m² facility for maintenance and graffiti cleaning, featuring two roads through the building.
- Amenities Building: For maintenance operatives and train drivers.
- Maintenance Area: Centralised pit for train maintenance access.
- Elevated Platform: For roof-level maintenance work.
- Presentation Platform: For deep/presentation cleaning.
- Site Services: Power, stormwater, and hydraulic services.
- Systems Interface: Physical infrastructure to interface with various systems (ICT, DPPS, overhead switching).
- Specialist Equipment: Including a crane, Depot Personnel Protection System and graffiti removal waste treatment.

Advanced Facilities for Long-Term Support
The LSF is equipped to support both 7-car and future 10-car HCMT sets. Its design allows for adaptable, efficient maintenance operations, contributing to the long-term performance and presentation of the HCMT fleet while reducing the need for trains to return to other depots for routine work.
Collaboration and Expertise
This project is delivered as part of the HCMT program by the Evolution Rail Consortium, comprising Downer, CRRC, Plenary Group, and Degnan. Combining world-class construction and rail maintenance expertise, the collaboration ensures the facility meets Melbourne’s current and future rail requirements.
