Calder Park Light Service Facility
Degnan partnered with Downer and the Evolution Rail Consortium to deliver the High Capacity Metro Train (HCMT) Light Service Facility (LSF) at Calder Park, supporting the long-term maintenance and operation of Melbourne’s HCMT fleet. The facility was designed to meet operational requirements for light maintenance, presentation, and graffiti removal, ensuring Melbourne’s bigger, better trains remain safe, reliable, and ready for service.
Through an Early Contractor Involvement (ECI) process, Degnan and Downer collaborated to deliver a cost-effective and high-quality solution, combining world-class construction expertise with rail maintenance know-how. The project scope included over 1 km of new track configuration, internal roads, car parks, drainage, pathways, and overhead wiring.
Sustainable Design and Environmental Care
Sustainability and environmental care were central to the project. Rainwater reuse, sensitive stormwater management, and careful utility planning ensured the facility operated responsibly. Active conservation efforts protected the local growling grass frog habitat, reflecting Degnan’s commitment to environmental stewardship alongside delivering essential rail infrastructure.
Key infrastructure features a 1,700 m² maintenance building, amenities, centralised pit, elevated and presentation platforms, plus site services and system interfaces to support efficient operations.
The LSF now supports the long-term maintenance of 70 HCMTs delivered by the Evolution Rail Consortium (Downer, CRRC, and Plenary) for the Victorian Government.
By keeping trains on-site for routine maintenance, the facility improves operational efficiency and contributes to the performance and presentation of Melbourne’s rail fleet.
