Town Hall Escalator Upgrade Program

Our experience in successfully and safely delivering challenging station upgrades was fundamental to Degnan being awarded this project. Degnan manages resources and programming to ensure the train services and station operations are not impacted.

The challenges at Town Hall Station are mostly around maintaining a safe and suitable pedestrian circulation, as well as being able to transport almost 100 tonne of equipment in and out of the station during nightly station closures.

Other works to be completed at the same time as the escalator replacement include structural, mechanical, fire, and building fit-out works and the reinstallation of the ticketing, station passenger information, CCTV and other services.

PROJECT INFORMATION

Following on from our successful replacement of the heritage Escalators 1 & 2 at Town Hall Station a few years ago, Degnan have recently been awarded the contract to replace two escalators at Sydney’s Town Hall, which service two lower-level Platforms. The two existing escalators are deemed to be life expired and will be replaced with new extra heavy-duty escalators.

Each escalator is 30 metres long and will require a specialised demolition schedule and construction techniques to comply with the heavily restricted underground conditions at Town Hall Station.

Town Hall railway station is a heritage-listed underground commuter rail station located in the centre of Sydney’s CBD. The station opened on 28 February 1932 and was named after the Sydney Town Hall, which is located directly above the station.
The station opened on 28 February 1932 and was built with six platforms, split over two levels with three platforms on each level. Only four platforms were in use until the Eastern Suburbs line opened in June 1979.
