Normanby Car Wash Facility Upgrade
The Normanby Train Wash Facility Upgrade for Queensland Rail involved the coordination and delivery of upgrades to a critical rail maintenance facility in Brisbane. The project included works within the live rail corridor, enhancing washing infrastructure, upgrading water treatment systems and establishing a recycling plant to support more efficient and sustainable operations.
Planning Around Live Operations
The Normanby Train Wash Facility supports Queensland Rail’s daily fleet operations, requiring works to be carefully planned to minimise disruption. Degnan’s experience working in live rail environments enabled the team to coordinate access, construction activities and operational interfaces while maintaining safe and efficient delivery.
Integrating Multiple Work Packages
The project required the coordination of civil, structural, building and services works within a constrained site environment. From almost 100 pile excavations and retaining structures through to facility upgrades, water treatment improvements and service relocations, Degnan managed multiple interfaces to deliver an integrated solution.
Coordinating Complex Rail Delivery
Delivering upgrades within an operational rail corridor requires a strategic approach to planning, sequencing and stakeholder coordination. Degnan worked closely with Queensland Rail and project stakeholders to align construction activities with operational requirements, ensuring the facility remained available throughout delivery.
Managing Safety in a High-Risk Environment
Working alongside Brisbane’s Inner City Bypass and within an active rail corridor required robust safety management, detailed planning and proactive risk control. Degnan’s structured approach to delivery ensured works progressed safely while maintaining continuity of critical rail operations.
Delivering Sustainable Infrastructure Improvements
The upgrade included improvements to the facility’s washing systems, water treatment infrastructure and the introduction of a recycling plant. These enhancements support more efficient resource use while improving the long-term functionality and reliability of Queensland Rail’s train maintenance operations.
