Como Station Upgrade
As part of the Transport Access Program (TAP), Degnan successfully delivered the award-winning Como Station Upgrade for Transport for NSW. The project, which received the prestigious Banksia Foundation Clean Technology Sustainability Award 2021, exemplifies innovative and sustainable infrastructure solutions, enhancing accessibility, modernising facilities, and improving the overall customer experience for public transport users.
The upgrade transformed Como Station into a modern, accessible, and sustainable facility.
Sandstone walls and heritage reflections in concrete honour the area’s natural and historical significance.
Scope of Work
Removal of existing ramp and the construction of new DDA compliant ramp
reconstruction of the existing stairs
Formalisation of the kiss and ride area with nosing and handrail upgrades to the improved existing access stairs
Construction of two new lifts allowing access from the underpass to the platforms and from street level and the car park to the underpass including
associated lobbies, awnings, canopies and flooring upgradesNew accessible pathways throughout the station precinct
platform resurfacing and tactile upgrades
Station building, amenities and platform refresh works
Improvements to the existing ramp from Como Parade to the underpass to be DDA compliant.
New landscaping to unify surrounding bushland with the new additions.
The project celebrated local heritage through artistic and architectural elements, including a mural by Merindah Funnell of the Kurranulla Aboriginal Corporation.
Como Station is now sustainably powered with solar energy during the day; this innovative Solar Photovoltaic Glass (PV) system provides a reliable, clean source of power and increases the resilience of Transport for NSW’s energy supply. This future smart solution demonstrates how alternative technology and innovative ideas can be integrated within the rail corridor whilst also having a strong visual aesthetic.
The Como Station Upgrade not only supports existing public transport use but also prepares for future growth, creating a more accessible and enjoyable experience for all users. Certified as Excellent under the IS Design Rating Scheme, it sets a new benchmark for delivering sustainable infrastructure in a highly regulated environment.
We thank Transport for NSW and Sydney Trains for embracing and collaborating on the project’s visions. Special thanks also to all our staff and sub-contractors for bringing this innovation to reality; it is an incredible, collaborative accomplishment that we are proud to have had a part in creating.
“Degnan shows excellent innovation that can be replicated and scaled, clearly meeting the innovation goals across transport infrastructure, renewable energy and sustainability. Their work shows a whole new way of thinking for network planning”
