Central Station Brisbane Upgrade

Degnan is delivering a major infrastructure upgrade at Queensland Rail’s Central Station, one of the busiest and most operationally complex stations in the state’s rail network.

The project involves the staged replacement of critical vertical transport infrastructure servicing Platforms 5 and 6, including the design, supply, removal and installation of four new escalators and one new lift.

Working within a highly constrained live rail environment, Degnan is coordinating complex construction sequencing, rail access requirements, logistics and public interfaces to safely deliver the works while maintaining commuter access and minimising disruption. The project requires detailed planning and collaboration with Queensland Rail and key stakeholders to manage staged delivery, temporary access arrangements and integration with existing station infrastructure.

Design, Procurement & Planning

Degnan is responsible for the complete design coordination, procurement, and staged delivery planning for all new escalators and lift infrastructure.

Working within a constrained operational environment, the project requires detailed planning and stakeholder coordination to manage construction sequencing, rail access requirements, public interfaces, and logistics within the live station environment.

The project also includes associated services, structural modifications, temporary works, and integration with existing station infrastructure.

Escalator Replacement Works

The project includes the staged removal and replacement of four escalators servicing Platforms 5 and 6.

Works are being delivered across multiple separable portions to minimise disruption to commuters and maintain station functionality throughout construction. This includes demolition of existing escalators, structural modifications, installation of new escalator systems, and final commissioning and handover.

Complex lifting operations, possession works, and material movements are carefully coordinated within restricted rail access windows and high-traffic public areas.

Lift Upgrade & Accessibility Improvements

The upgrade includes the complete replacement of Lift 4, delivering improved accessibility for passengers.

Work will involve demolition of the existing lift system and structural modifications followed by installation and commissioning of the new lift.

Temporary access arrangements will be maintained throughout construction to ensure continued station operations and public safety.

Delivering in a Live Operational Rail Environment

Delivering major infrastructure upgrades within Queensland’s busiest commuter station requires close collaboration with Queensland Rail and key stakeholders to safely manage rail operations, passenger movements, and construction activities simultaneously.

Degnan’s staged delivery approach prioritises:

  • Safe public access
  • Operational continuity
  • Efficient construction sequencing
  • Stakeholder coordination
  • Quality infrastructure outcomes

The project demonstrates Degnan’s capability to successfully deliver complex transport infrastructure upgrades within highly constrained live environments while maintaining critical network operations.
