Bankstown Station TAP Upgrade

Delivered as part of Transport for NSW’s Transport Access Program, the Bankstown Station Upgrade improved accessibility, customer facilities and interchange connections while supporting the future transport needs of the Bankstown community and wider Sydney region.

Delivered within a live operational rail environment, the project transformed the station precinct while maintaining continuous customer access and station operations throughout construction.

Improving Accessibility and Connectivity
The upgrade delivered significant improvements to station accessibility and passenger movement throughout the precinct. New ticketing facilities, upgraded station infrastructure and improved interchange connections enhanced the experience for customers while supporting future growth in the region.
The project formed part of a broader Transport Access Program aimed at delivering accessible, modern, secure and integrated public transport infrastructure.
Delivering Above a Live Railway
A key challenge of the project was delivering major infrastructure works above a live railway line while keeping the station fully operational. Careful planning, staging and coordination were required to maintain safe access for customers and support ongoing rail operations throughout construction.
The team worked closely with stakeholders and consultants to coordinate design and construction activities within the constrained operational environment.
Supporting Growth and Customer Experience
The completed upgrade delivered a more accessible, functional and welcoming station environment while improving connections between rail and interchange facilities. The project provides lasting benefits for customers and supports the evolving transport needs of the Bankstown community.
Stakeholder Coordination
Working within a busy brownfield rail environment, Degnan coordinated closely with Transport for NSW, consultants and stakeholders throughout construction.
The project involved a significant customer interface and ongoing engagement with surrounding stakeholders, requiring careful planning and communication to maintain station operations, support adjoining public spaces and successfully deliver staged project milestones.
Staged Construction and Commissioning
The works included a staged commissioning program involving new ticket gates, a new ticket office and the decommissioning of temporary station facilities. Structural steel and glass canopies were fabricated off-site and integrated into the construction program to minimise disruption and support efficient delivery.
